THE MAKING OF THE LEGACY

Here are 9 images which explain some of the content and approach to the production of The Legacy.
This won the UK National AV Championship in 2009 and the Flanders Image Festival (European Cup) in 2010.

Image 1
This picture sums up an important element of the production –extreme contrast between the up-market house in which the protagonists live and the destruction of their comfortable existence by politically inspired violence.
Image 2
A detail of the vandalised house. Jagged edges are symbolic of what has occurred. The black space in the middle speaks of emptiness, the night, fear; it creates space for another image to be brought up into it to develop the narrative.
Image 3
Four images in montage - the title of the film, the graffiti on the background sprayed by extremists, the Post Box symbolising Loyalist values of the protagonists and the row of houses where action takes place.
Image 4
A suitably wet day is used to emphasise the grim housing estate in which the extremists live. A discarded beer tin underlines the situation.
Image 5
The main actor in the story, photographed in a way to make her appear in the most threatening light.
Image 6
A montage of the previous image with a visual message of hope at the end of the film; but by including the threatening face, hope is shown as fragile.
Image 7
The climax of the production and a secret recipe for blood effect. Not disclosing it, as I’ve not seen anyone with our budgets do it so convincingly.
Images 8 and 9
In a break during the National Championship and before we knew the results, Richard Brown told me he could only suggest one improvement. The Belfast scenes should be re-shot in wet conditions. This I did and later festival results bore out the wisdom of this approach. These pictures show how the mood of the audience can be affected by the lighting used.
